How to grow muskmelon in India

Growing muskmelons in India involves careful planning and execution to ensure optimal yields. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to cultivate muskmelons in India:

  1. Climate and soil requirement for muskmelons: Muskmelons thrive in warm climates with temperatures between 20°C to 25°C. They cannot tolerate frost and high humidity. It also prefers well-drained loamy to sandy loamy soil with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
  2. Sowing timing: Muskmelons are a summer crop and can be cultivated during the kharif and rabi seasons. In North India, sowing is typically done in December-January in river beds and February in plains. In South India, October-November is favorable, while September is ideal for off-season production.
  3. Spacing: Treat seeds with Trichoderma viride that is 4g or Pseudomonas fluorescens which is 10g or carbendazim of 2g/kg before sowing. Sow seeds at a depth of about 1 cm in raised beds or channels. Use a spacing of 1.5 m x 30 cm in a raised bed single row system.
  4. Irrigation and fertilizers: Irrigate the field before sowing and once a week thereafter. Drip irrigation is recommended for efficient water use, and apply YM (farmyard manure) at 20 t/ha, NPK at 40:60:30 kg/ha as basal, and nitrogen at 40 kg/ha 30 days after sowing.
  5. Harvesting: Muskmelons are ready to harvest about 120 days after sowing. They do not continue to ripen after being picked, so timing is crucial and expect a yield of about 20 t/ha under optimal conditions.
